The Selection Of Your Puppy

Selecting an ethical breeder is the first and most important step in this process.  Most reputable breeders will evaluate and temperament test their litters.  These breeders will be able to help select the puppy that meets your needs. The selection process begins with a discuss of your lifestyle and the type of activities you have in mind for your dog.  Try to be flexible.  Both males and females make great companion dogs.  Personality is more important than gender or color.

Most perspective owners lack the knowledge, experience and time required to correctly evaluate a litter.  Brief visits with the puppies can be very misleading.  A mellow, easygoing puppy may have a brief burst of energy while you are visiting with the puppies.  A puppy that is very active and outgoing may be resting quietly in the corner during a brief visit.  Try to plan on several 30 minute visits with the breeder and the puppies.  The entire family should be included.

Proper placement benefits both the puppy and the new owner.  Usually, more than one puppies in a litters will meet the needs of the family.  In some litters the personalities of the puppies vary greatly.  The needs of the families are also variable. The breeder that spends time with the litter of puppies can distinguish between the energetic puppy, the bold puppy, and the easy-going one.  The "last" puppy in the litter may be the "pick of the litter" for you and your family.  Reputable breeders will help you select the puppy that needs your families needs.

  • The puppy that is right for an older couple may will not be the right puppy for an active family with energetic children.
  • Some people want a bold, mischievous puppy and other want an easy-going, mellow puppy.
  • Bold dominant males, strong-willed alpha females, and quiet reserved puppies become wonderful companions  when they are placed in the proper setting with the right owners.
  • First time dog owners and families with very young children have special needs and there may not be a suitable puppy in every litter.
